Engine Number

Lost my California DMV Registration Card - need to get a replacement. Form requires ENGINE NUMBER in addition to license and VIN. According to the shop manual, the engine number is buried on this bike underneath the engine sprocket. Is there any other way to find the engine number besides removing sprocket covers, engine covers etc? Pain in the ass.

it's actually just below the shifter shaft on the case, machined surface and clearly visible...

Thanks. the last portion of it is obscured by the sidestand mechanism... guess I have to remove that this weekend. I can see X-XXX*XX... hmm.
