Shift shaft play?

As in: Should there be any? I took the link off the splined shaft, and felt like I was tightening too much to get it to stay on without axial (in-out) play.

Okay, in the throes of the moment, I didn't ask the question for s**t. What I wanted to know was whether there should be any play of the shift plate (not the shift lever) on the splined shift shaft. There was...because the shift plate had expanded enough to not completely bite on the splines. A buddy (actual mechanic at the shop where I was working on the bike) gave it a little snug-up, and it seems fine. A torque spec from KTM in the nice manual would be helpful...
