Knowing where neutral is in the shift pattern and engaging neutral are two different things.
First, it helps that the clutch is adjusted properly and fully releases when the lever is pulled. Some people find it easier to shift into neutral from second gear as opposed to first gear. Most everyone finds it easier to shift into neutral while the motorcycle is still in motion.
